My MacBook charger has been bitten a tiny bit of damage and now isn't working. No green light, nothing. My kitten did it I suspect. She did it to another charger too I'm absolutely gutted.
Is it safe to buy a MacBook pro unofficial charger on eBay?
Thanks

hello! i have a white macbook purchased in 2008 and i'd like to play the sims 3. i've looked up the minimum system requirements, and it looks like so far, le macbook will be fine-- i have a 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo processor, 4GB ram, an intel gma x3100 video card, 220+GB free HD space, and i'm running snow leopard 10.6.2. i've heard that the sims 3 has some pretty heavy-duty graphics that can still lag on some speedier machines, so i'm curious what others' experiences have been in playing the sims 3 on their macs (esp. if your mac has similar specs to mine). also, what do you think of the sims 3? i downloaded the sims 3 app for my iphone and i'm pretty addicted! thanks :)

So, between new computers and over pruning hard drives, I have lost one of my favorite Icon Sets from ages ago.
I THINK I got it from the Pixelpalooza submissions in the early 00's. (And if you know what I am talking about then I am asking you nicely, HAVE YOU SEEN THESE ICONS??) :)

I only have one icon from the set still attached to a folder -

I loved this set and I feel reallly stupid for losing them.
The set was basically someone's interpretations of flowers if created by graphic artists. Several looked like pinwheel type creations. One was multicolored and is specifically the one I am looking for.

If you happen to have this collection please please please contact me. Thanks.

x-posted to a couple of places.

Hey all,
My grandmother, a 75 year old who can navigate email and a game of solitare, really needs a new computer. She's still on dial-up and on an ancient PC. We're getting her onto high speed and I'm trying to pursude the people doing the computer buying (who are PC users) to go with a mac for ease of use.

I'm wondering what this community could suggest for a very simple mac that is on the cheap side for an older user.

thx!

Last night I kept getting the "you must restart your computer now" message. I tried doing the fsck run, said everything was ok. Now when I try to start the computer, I hear the fan and such work, but nothing comes up on the screen. It stays black.

I bought a new Mac Mini for my folks and am in the process of setting it up and I'm seeing all sorts of graphical weirdness and I can't tell if the graphical weirdness is part of Snow Leopard, or a problem with the graphics card... or a problem with the combo of the graphics card, miniDVI adapter, and this screen.

here's what I'm seeing: When I go into the preferences for an application like Thunderbird, I'm see all sorts of odd ghosting and graphical artifacts as I flip through the tabs and options.

I'm using a Dell standard flatscreen monitor with the Mac Mini, connected using the MiniDVI to DVI adapter and DVI cable.

Any ideas what's causing this? Is this a known issue with Snow Leapard or is there a problem with the graphics card here?

Only see this problem in the options for Thunderbird and other 3rd party applications, and I know Apple broke all sorts of stuff with Snow Leopard ... so what I've trying to figure out if this is a hardware problem or not...?

Update: I've confirmed this is a Snow Leopard + Thunderbird setting rendering issue. I tested it on my Dad's MacBook Pro laptop which I just installed Snow Leopard and saw the exact same problem. So it's not a hardware problem. It's a Snow Leopard rendering problem.

Augh. So the other day, my MacBook Pro's DVD drive started making incredibly awful noises. I tried to eject the DVD as soon as I could, but it took awhile for it to actually eject. (Since then I also dropped my MacBook, I know, I know). So now the DVD sucking mechanism won't work either because of whatever was going on with the horrible noise or because I dropped it. (I never tried using it in between those two incidents).

Does anyone know how expensive it might be to get it fixed? I certainly can just get an external drive, but it'd be nice to have the internal one working. (If it helps, I've got 2008 model--the one before the unibody MacBook).

Does anyone know what might happen if I try to force a DVD in? I'm a little scared that it would get stuck in there permanently or create more problems, but I suppose there's a chance that just the sucking mechanism is broken and the drive works perfectly fine otherwise. I'm just not sure if it's worth trying out. I suppose the worst that would probably happens is that I would lose a blank CD. Thoughts?

Hey all,

So I have a whole bunch of podcasts that are meditation, relaxation music, "power nap" tunes, etc. All things that I don't want to delete. Some of the podcasts don't exist anymore, so I don't need to 'subscribe' to any new ones.

Is there any way to get these files out of the podcast library and into the music or audiobook library?

Is there any way to organize podcasts by folder, so I can put all the similar ones together? (I googled this one and it looks like 'no'.)

Thanks for any tips/advice!

Now that apple is only selling complete crap keyboards - what are people using for keyboards to go with their macs?

I just bought a Mac Mini for my parents, but there's no way in hell I'd buy them the flat apple keyboard. That thing just screams discomfort.

It's like apple just said, "Screw 2 decades worth of ergonomic research, let's come out with the most uncomfortable keyboard design ever because it's looks cool to be flat." Because we all know in the mac world, looks are more important than actual function.

That said, what are people using instead of the Apple keyboard. I'd like to find a replacement keyboard that actually supported all the apple buttons for things like volume.

I'd love to find some place that still sells the PREVIOUS Apple keyboard before they went to this flat design. Anyone know of a place that sells just the old style one?

Update: I think these might work.

Just happened to see this about Apple not honoring its Applecare warranties due to a computer being used by a smoker. This is the first I am hearing of this, but I would guess that if this is an issue with Apple's computer users, then it is probably also an issue with iPod and even iPhone users.

I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix this mess. Basically, I need to make a Cisco Linksys 5-port workgroup switch work with my Airport network. If this is impossible, I need to know what to do to replace it.

longer explanation )

ETA: I played with the cords and switched the order (put the Airport first), and everything's working! I'm so happy. :)

I had to reformat my computer a while back, and I haven't synced my iPod with it since. I just have and it's come up with a message (that I was expecting!) saying that it's synced with a different library and do I want to sync it with my computer instead. I know that if I do that it will replace the stuff on my iPod with what's on my computer (even though it's pretty much the same), but what will happen with tracks that I've purchased from iTunes on my iPod? Will they be deleted when I sync or not? If they will be - how can I sync my iPod without losing these?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Number of times the mini-DVI cable has fallen out of the mac mini on it's own in the first 24 hours of having the mac mini: 3 times in the first 24 hours.

The problem is the weight of the DVI (male) plugged into the DVI (female) part of the adaptor cable. That weight causes the mini-DVI (male) plugged into the mac mini to just fall out on it's own all the time.

MASSIVE design flaw.

Going to have to figure out a way to tape it so the mini-DVI (male) plug doesn't fall out all the time.

with the barest touch of my mousepad on the scrollbar, it tends to (now...can't recall when this started) jump as if I had clicked it 2 or 3 times. Yet, it does not trigger anything that requires double-clicking...only the scrollbar.

Any clue what is up?

I'm running a Powerbook G4..OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger, I think)

Edit complete- sometimes my fingers get ahead of one another, and I don't notice. Sorry for the massive confusion...and thanks for pointing it out...LOL

A few months ago I sold my ibook g4 to a friend. I wiped the hard drive and restored it. Besides a short battery life, it worked fine. She rarely uses it, and its only used for itunes and the internet. She turned it on this morning and let me know the keyboard wasn't working. First the volume keys, the dimming button, and then eventually (I think) they all went.

What does this mean? Is this computer totally hopeless, or is there an easy fix?
If it's not something that can be fixed for free, I'm thinking to just refund her money. If I do this, how would I go about selling a computer that doesn't work completely?

Thanks for any help!

i've been having this problem for a while and i've posted about it before but didn't get any help. a good time has lapsed, so i think now is a good time to recirculate this question.

for some time now, i've been unable to watch videos on certain websites. mtv.com, primarily, but now i find that i am having difficulty with video hosted by the cisco company (the one that ellen page has been doing adverts for.) when i try to watch a video from mtv, it tells me to go to this (click) website and fix the settings to enable third party content, but it won't let me check any of the boxes i am clearly supposed to check to do that. when i try and view video hosted by the cisco network (mainly on paramore.net) i hit the play button and absolutely nothing happens. my flash player is as up to date as possible, and i have uninstalled and reinstalled firefox several times. these same sites also do not play or work in safari, so i can't really think of anything else that could be the problem so i am wondering if any of you guys can help me come up with a fix for this?

also, i've noticed since i upgraded to snow leopard that my buddy icons on adium when i am using AIM do not appear. in their last update, it says the bug was fixed, but i am still having this problem. i uninstalled and deleted every adium related thing on my hard drive, only to reinstall, but alas - still no buddy icons. they work in ichat, but the second i switch to adium they're gone! anyone else having the same issue?

I don't know how these (the Firefox html icon and gif icon) got to my Finder top bar and how I can get rid of them. It's driving me slightly insane. I've tried Finder Preferences and force quitting Finder altogether. I'm hoping for an easy solution to this. When I click on them they open right into my Firefox bookmarks html file and a gif thus they seem to be shortcuts? Please help. I'm on Snow Leopard on a unibody MacBook.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but I didn't see anything.

I have been sitting here for literally 20 minutes now staring at the "Checking iTunes Library" status bar. iTunes has been doing this to me for a while now and it keeps getting worse. I have a pretty large music library (a little over 37,000 songs) but this is just ridiculous. I don't want iTunes to check my songs, I just want to play my music. Is there any way I can bypass this stupidity or speed it up somehow? For reference, I'm on an Intel iMac running Tiger (upgrading as soon as I can afford). If anyone can give me a solution to this I will be so, so, so happy.

I recently inherited a PowerBook G4 (1.5 GHz, running Leopard 10.5.8), and am getting really frustrated with using my Gmail with Mail.

I want to setup my folders in Mail to sync with my Gmail folders. I have Gmail setup as an IMAP. So if I delete something, it goes into my Gmail Trash, not just my "On My Mac" Trash. Same thing if I'm working on a Draft; I don't want to two draft folders. Basically I want using my mail to be as streamlined as it is on my iPod Touch.

Is there a way I can configure my Mail folders to sync with my Gmail folders, instead of creating new ones on the server? Or is this just the way Mail is on Leopard? I also had a lot of trouble importing all my messages; I had to do it in several sessions. Arg!
